Many dog breeds can be good guard dogs. One of the important thing for a guard dog is its looks. If your dog gives a nice look with white and fluffy coat the thief is most likely to challenge the protected boundary and if your dog looks fierce the thief might not dear to go anywhere near to its boundaries. But it all depends on the owner. Some owners like dogs who bark all the time and some prefer comparably quite dogs.
